Excursions

The Excursions Committee organizes a variety of tours and short trips for small groups of members. Destinations include exhibits, galleries, museums, historic properties, gardens, and other places of interest to our membership.

Historical Activities

NSCDA works to preserve the past in order to provide information for the future. National projects include the following: oral histories, sampler survey, survey of American Paintings and portraits before 1914, and ancestor bibliography register. The DC Society is primarily focused on the following projects:

  • “Ancestor Talks” where members research and share information about one of their ancestors

  • Archiving NSCDA and DC Society records that date back to the 1891 founding of the national organization

  • Daytime and evening book clubs

  • Field trips and activities related to the mission of this committee

Membership

The Membership Committee helps prospective candidates navigate the application process and welcomes new members. Participation on this committee includes attending one or two committee meetings per year and helping with a cocktail party for new and prospective members.

Patriotic Service

NSCDA-DC works through education to stimulate a spirit of true patriotism and a knowledge of the American heritage in citizens and others. Projects include the following:

  • Scholarships and awards in American History

  • Scholarships and awards to Native Americans pursuing careers in the field of Nursing

  • An annual Congressional Seminar Essay Contest which sponsors high school students to spend a week in Washington to learn about our national government and to tour our nation’s capital

  • Support of our troops and veterans abroad and at home

Program

The Program Committee plans and organizes various speakers throughout the year. The majority of the Society's programs feature authors and speakers who are experts in American history, historic preservation and various other fields related to the NSCDA mission.

Young Dames

The mission of the Young Dames is to attract, engage, and retain members who are age 50 and younger, with the vision of providing opportunities for younger members to work and grow together while learning and promoting the ideals of our Society. This committee plans events such as a tour of Gunston Hall, potlucks at members’ homes, summer movie nights at Dumbarton House (during the Jane Austen Film Festival), and happy hours.
