Last year marked the 400th anniversary of Virginia’s first General Assembly, the first governmental body in English North America. Meeting during a sweltering July in 1619, twenty-two Burgesses assembled in the second church at Jamestown, a timber frame structure at the center of the growing town. The Jamestown Rediscovery team, under the leadership of Director of Archaeology David Givens, has spent the last three years excavating the location of the first General Assembly and the people buried within.
The talk and visual presentation will cover the results of the digs and some of the fantastic discoveries the team has unearthed. Many questions have been raised by this project. How did the Europeans adapt to the North American environment? What can we learn about the people whose lives at Jamestown were undocumented? How can material culture describe the relations between the English and the native peoples? What can the archaeological remains tell us about experiments in industry, trade, and agriculture in 1619? Please register and join us to find out!
